Hey, I just bought a new 2012 Yamaha VXR and this is my first post on this great forum! I've already done a lot of reading on this forum and learned a lot. I've rode pwc's for a long time but this VXR is the first pwc that I have bought brand new and let me say it has been amazing so far. It has unbelievable performance. So my question is what maintenance should I do after breaking the engine in. I followed yamaha's break-in procedure of 5 mins @ 2000rpm, next 30 mins below 5000 rpm and next hour below 6000 rpm (took a lot of self control not to nail right away ).

I saw in the owners manual that at 10 hours the oil (but not filter??) should be changed. What do you guys think about the timing of the change for the 1.8 liter engine? I have 5.1 hours on it right now.
I think there is a 1 year factory warranty but I really want to do all the work myself. Any advice for my new VXR would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys. I would change the oil filter at the 10 hour oil change just to be safe. I know the oem filter is a little pricy but you don't want to skimp on a after market filter. I only use yamaha filters and oil.
TOMMY JORDAN These yamaha engines have been put through the tests time and time again. The reason why the engineers don't specify a filter change at 10 hours is that in their analysis over hundreds of test engines - a filter change is not required. If one was - they would have specified one (and we won't complain). My little wr250r motor cycle has a 26,000mile valve check interval. They would have run numerous bikes at full throttle to get TI that number when x% were out of spec and needing adjustment. As with all my toys I want to do everything I can to keep this VXR running perfectly for a long time to come, even if it means going overboard and being obsessive. Welcome to the forum. You might be worrying too much. You have purchased a very 'worry-fee' type of ski, it's not pain in the azz, or a high-maintenance mistress like some of them, but there are some great peeps here who can help you with any questions as you go along.
That Yamaha is all about getting out on the water and having a blast! We had our FZ's out yesterday I hope you guys get out there this weekend and have a great Memorial Day! Hey everyone, thanks for the welcome and responses! I had a great memorial day weekend with my new ski, 3 solid days of riding.
The VXR is awesome. I know this ski is low maintenance but I still want to keep it in tip top shape, it's just how I am with these things.
As for the 10 hour oil change, should I use yamalube or go to a synthetic? And what weight is the oil? It didn't specify in the manual. I will probably change the oil filter anyway, I've never heard of not changing the filter especially after break-in with all the particles flying around.
