I really regret buying this motor. First of all, it is very loud, much louder than a water-cooled engine. It is as loud as a lawn mower if you stuck your head right down by the lawn mower engine. Second, it doesn't tilt sufficiently to get the prop out of the water like a water-cooled engine so we have to take it off the dinghy if we want to tow the dinghy. Third, the gear shift is really clunky to operate.
I looked at the Mercury engines with the gear shift integrated into the throttle control and that is a much superior design. Electricity study guide. Had it for 10 years and it still runs like a top. And the air-cooled feature makes it perfect for cruising in shallow and swampy water. Little thing has a lot of power too for such as small engine. It will plane my 14 ft boat with two guys in it. Downsides are it's a little loud (of course it is, it's air cooled!) and it doesn't always start on the first pull.
Someone said they have to clean the carb a lot, but I run ethanol free fuel in mine and haven't ever had to clean the carb. Best money I ever spent.
I bought this engine used and it looked like it had been stored outside mounted on a boat. I have had a few minor problems with it over the last 2 years, but nothing that any briggs and stratton owner can't fix (carb cleaning, clogged fuel filter.). I run this engine in shallow bayous in South Louisiana. The lower unit is very well designed to protect the gearing that drives the propeller.
I've hit more stumps and run aground more times than you can count and the lower unit still works and shifts fine. Air-cool means no worries about a clogged impeller and overheating when in the mud. It pushes my 16' canoe about 8-10 mph, but any faster would roll the canoe in a sudden turn. It also gets great fuel economy (7 mpg wide open). Overall, my experience with this engine has been very good. It's tough, rugged, and durable.
May parts are available online, it's easy to find parts when things need to be replaced. I recommend this engine to people who hunt and fish in shallow waters. I have confidence that when I hit something (at low rpm) that the engine and gearing is fine. If you have no need to go in shallow water (ie, yacht dingys, open water boating, etc.) I recommend the typical 2 stroke or marine 4 stroke engines. I hope this helps you in choosing the proper engine for your specific needs.
I purchased one of these 4 years ago to push around a 22' sailboat. I paid only $680 for it new. Other brands of 5hp 4-stroke outboards are easily twice that amount.
I love the motor and it does everything I needed it to. Here are the positives and negatives. Positives 1) Extremely economic on gas consumption 2) Air Cooled so there is no impeller to foul and it is safe to run in shallow water or water full of sea weed. 3) Easy up keep. I change the plug, oil and lower unit oil each season. 4) Light and easy to carry.
Negatives 1) Because it is air cooled it is loud 2) It vibrates a lot. Some facts.because it's air-cooled it's louder than a 4-stroke, but not louder than a 2-stroke. It has a bit more vibration. Its slowest speed is still a pretty fast troll. Those I think are the biggest trade-offs. If those trade-offs are not acceptable to you then cough up the extra $400-600 for a 5hp 4-stroker. For the money it's a really good fishing engine.
I like that I don't have to deal with a water pump repair anymore, so overall it's an easier engine to maintain. Always starts by the 3rd pull (1st pull when it's warm).
I like being the only one on the water with American Iron on the transom; it has a distinctive look (I call it the FlatHead) and engine note. Overall, you'll either love it or hate it; that's pretty much the reaction you'll hear or read about it. PIECE OF JUNK. I'VE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE, LOUD AS HECK, I MEAN HEADACHE LOUD, AND IT JUMPS LIKE A FISH WHEN YOU PUT IT IN GEAR AND USUALLY DIES. POOR DESIGN, YOU CAN'T EVEN LOCK THE MOTOR IN A RAISED POSITION TO LAND THE BOAT ON SHORE.
I WAS GOING THE CHEAP ROUTE, BUT I IMMEDIATELY REGRETTED NOT PUTTING MORE MONEY INTO IT AND BUYING A 'REAL' OUTBOARD. I TRIED TO PUT NO STARS ON THE REVIEW, BUT YOU HAVE TO PUT SOMETHING TO POST THE REVIEW, BUT, FROM MY EXPERIENCE, IT REALLY DOESN'T EVEN RATE ONE STAR.
